Ιn the artist's own words, "the work as a whole revolves around a conceptual axis of reflection: “the multifaceted concept of space”. The two-dimensional surface, negotiating aniconic, abstract, formal episodes, aspires to produce a space conceptually ambivalent, moving between the dipoles of imaginary/real, spiritual/material, mythical/logical. Different qualities of texture and colouring, various relations of sizes, coexistence of different materials and techniques, sense of flow or solidity, condensation or dilution, negotiation of empty and full. The structure balances between “manmade”-“non-manmade” to support an image of digital reference and, at the same time, experienced materiality.
He was born in Athens in 1987. In 2011, he graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts. In 2019 he completed his Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the same university. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Greece and Cyprus. He lives and works in Athens.
Kapnisis has been involved in drawing and painting, addressing the concepts of vision, journeying without cause, landscape, self-confinement (isolation) and theological matters relating to the nature of image. Pictures initially drawn on a computer, then painted by hand on surfaces like paper and wood, negotiate the contrast between manmade and non-manmade, real and digital.
