"Niki Gulema's works are notes on realities and dreams, interconnecting in the intimate space, exposing thoughts or wordings that could have just been made. Familiar senses like flying and/or the fear of, distance from loved ones, waiting in waiting rooms. Abstract signs of memories of people and places, memories of feelings spotted on the medium as the beginning of an idea to be revisited."Agape Harmani
Niki Gulema (b.1988) lives and works in Athens. She studied Painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts and Interior Design at the Technical University of Athens.
Her abstract painting makes references to familiar spaces and details of everyday reality. Gulema seems to focus on the faintest and smallest details, emphasizing the fleeting and the imperceptible, what we usually miss out. In between representation and the imaginary, reality and dream, forms a whole. Imperfectly drawn but precise, her pictures urge us to consider a timeless reality, an incomplete narrative, a story with no ending.
Her work has notably been exhibited at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST), Kappatos Gallery, Enterprise Projects etc.
In 2018 she was awarded the “Artworks” Artist Fellowship (Visual Arts) of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.
